ChatGPT Ads Australia: A Practical 2026 Guide for Businesses

ChatGPT Ads Australia: A Practical 2026 Guide for Businesses

OpenAI Ads are well and truly here. On 16 April 2026, ChatGPT Ads started its rollout in Australia, giving businesses a new way to advertise inside a platform already being used by 900 million users a week worldwide.

While it presents a new opportunity for Australian businesses to access a very large number of people, it’s still a new platform to learn to optimise. In our 25+ years of ads management at Pixelstorm, we know this brings confusion and hesitation to both business owners and advertisers, so have already been investigating ChatGPT advertising in Australia, how they work, who they’re best suited for and how to best launch a measured test. This is what we know so far.

What is ChatGPT advertising in Australia?

ChatGPT Ads are a type of sponsored ad placement within the OpenAI Ads Manager Beta, similar to how Facebook Ads, Instagram Ads and Meta Ads can be run within the Meta Ads Manager. When someone sets up a ChatGPT Ads campaign, the ad appears separately from the organic answer to both ChatGPT Free and Go Tiers, while Plus, Pro and Business plans currently remain ad-free. The ads don’t influence any of the information, businesses or products the user is receiving, and are marked as sponsored content.

Setting up a campaign is also different to how advertisers and businesses may be used to with platforms like Google Ads, which target individual search terms. Instead, you use contextual targeting to describe the conversation you want the ad to be displayed in, and then OpenAI determines when it is most relevant to show the ad.

“What ChatGPT Ads is giving businesses the ability to reach people while they’re still in that process of understanding their problem and exploring potential solutions, instead of having to wait for people to actually search for their product or service. It sounds good, but whether that can produce a valuable return on investment can be another story, like any platform.”

How does the ChatGPT ads manager work?

To run ads on ChatGPT, you will need to use the ChatGPT ads manager. You don’t need a paid ChatGPT subscription to use the ads manager or to run ads. So, how do the ads themselves work?

Let’s say you run both Google Ads and ChatGPT Ads for you or a client’s pet grooming business in Sydney. In Google Ads, you might set up your campaign to target people searching for ‘pet groomers Sydney’. A ChatGPT Ads campaign would determine what conversations would be most relevant to the ad, such as someone looking for how often to have a dog groomed or how much pet grooming costs.

Campaign Types Currently Available Through OpenAI Ads Manager Beta

As of August 2026, advertisers have just one display option for their ChatGPT Ads with three different objective choices. All ads are shown in a sponsored card below the organic answer, although the headline, description, image and landing page are customisable. As for campaign objectives, advertisers have the option of:

Campaign ObjectiveGoalHow You Pay
Cost Per Mille (CPM)To increase brand visibility and reach.Per 1,000.
Cost Per Click (CPC)To bring more people to your website or landing page.Per valid click.
Optimised CPC (oCPC)To generate more clicks from people most likely to convert.Per valid click, not per conversion.

Similar to other ad platforms, CPM bidding may be better suited for awareness-style campaigns or early message testing, while CPC is more aligned with driving website traffic and tangible results. oCPC objectives are ideally for businesses with conversion tracking already in place who can measure return on investment closely.

Like running ads on any platform, it’s important to match what you want people to actually do with your objective. What we do at Pixelstorm is actually work backwards from the outcome you want to achieve for your business to determine a positive return on investment, then align the objective conversion event, creative and tracking before launch.

How much do ChatGPT Ads cost in Australia?

OpenAI has also recommended a maximum CPC starting bid of USD$3 to USD$5 per click, which sets the highest price you are willing to pay on your ad. What this doesn’t give you is a guaranteed click price. It’s also not the Australian benchmark. What you actually pay depends on a relevant-weighted auction, which is influenced by your ad quality, campaign goal and conversation context competition.

“Minimum ad budgets can be confusing. While you certainly could run an ad on $25, it’s not going to give you the performance data you or the campaign needs to get actual results. Imagine if each click on the ad costs $5. That leaves you with just 5 clicks with that budget. It’s leaving very little room for the campaign to learn, let alone conversions.”

ChatGPT Ads vs. Google Ads: The Important Differences

Google already has a hold of 88.22% of Australia’s search engine market in July 2026, with AI search tools and an advertising platform. However, as we already know, ChatGPT is being used by millions of users each week to find information and solutions, compare products and discover businesses. So, the question really is, are ChatGPT Ads better than Google Ads?

ComparisonGoogle AdsChatGPT Ads
Intent SignalBased on search queries.Based on the subject and context of a conversation.
Campaign TargetingUses keywords, audiences and search themes to place ads.Uses contextual targeting describing relevant conversations for placement.
Customer StageOften reaches people who know what they’re searching for already. Can reach people exploring solutions to a problem or comparing options.
Platform MaturityLaunched 23 October 2000 world-wide.Launched 9 February 2026 in the United States, rolling out to Australia, New Zealand and Canada 17 April 2026.
MeasurementMature conversion tracking and attribution tools.Offers conversion reporting, a measurement pixel and conversions API, but are still under development.
Role in the BudgetOften an established acquisition channel. Better treated as a controlled test alongside proven campaigns.

For now, until the platform is more developed and has been tested with your business, it is better to use it as complementary to your existing advertising strategy, not to fully replace. It’s something our Google Ads agency can help guide you on if you’re interested in its place in your own marketing strategy.

Google Ads in Action: On Track Physio

  • 147% increase in new patients.
  • 34% reduction in cost per lead.
  • More booking enquiries.
  • An improved landing page conversion rate.

Results like the ones we achieved for On Track Physio shows why Google Ads campaigns should not lose budget simply because a new platform has launched. ChatGPT Ads should be tested separately to support other marketing activities until they can be proven to create a more meaningful return on investment.

Is ChatGPT advertising worth it in Australia?

ChatGPT advertising in Australia is a huge opportunity that may be worthwhile for many businesses. However, as it’s still a new platform in development, it may not be a worthwhile investment or risk for all businesses just yet.

For a business with established marketing who can fund a controlled experiment without reducing their other activity, trying the ChatGPT Ads Manager  may be something to consider. This opportunity may be even greater for industries where customers spend more time researching, comparing options or asking detailed questions, such as when researching study options or for B2B consumers.

What industries are best suited for ChatGPT advertising?

B2B businesses and those in the education, training, professional services, technology and travel industries are some of the best suited for ChatGPT advertising in Australia. These are typically areas where customers spend more time researching, comparing options or asking detailed questions, such as on a platform like ChatGPT, before they make any decisions or choose a business.

Signs your business is ready to try ChatGPT Ads:

  • Your business has existing marketing channels producing useful performance data.
  • You understand the problems and questions that lead people to your offer.
  • The campaign can promote one clear product, service or action, not a broad category.
  • You have or are willing to build a focused landing page with tracking integrated.
  • There is a separate experimentation budget available.

The data from your existing campaigns is also very useful for launching a test in a new environment, like ChatGPT Ads. For example, at Pixelstorm, we use the search terms, content and sales questions that are already creating your best leads to create conversion-driven campaigns to actually achieve a sustainable, worthwhile return on your investment.

How do I set up ChatGPT Ads?

Before you can set up ChatGPT Ads, you will need to create and verify an OpenAI Ads Manager Beta Account, as well as completing your billing details. Then, you can start building a campaign around one clear goal, using suitable creatives, a relevant landing page and conversion tracking.

As ChatGPT Ads are still new, your first campaign should be treated as a structured test, even more so than with more mature platforms.

“Your goal when testing a new ads platform is to learn where it can fit into your marketing without committing a large budget. You really want that useful performance data to make up your own mind as there is not enough in terms of industry or even national or global benchmarking to help make an informed decision yet.”

1. Choose a goal.

Set one very clear and specific goal or action you want your ads to achieve, such as qualified enquiries, consultation bookings, applications, product purchases or demo requests. You will use this throughout your campaign to make decisions like setting your campaign objective, bidding model, guiding your landing page and measuring the campaign’s success.

2. Use real social proof.

Like any ad, your offer needs to be backed up by real evidence people can trust. Customer reviews, case study results, industry experience and awards can all be used to help build trust and get clicks through to your actual website.

3. Keep the campaign focused.

Narrow down one offer to pair with a defined audience and a specific problem you’re aiming to solve. The more focused a campaign is, the clearer the data, helping you pinpoint what works and what doesn’t.

4. Optimise your landing page.

Where you send people who click on an ad should continue the conversation from the sponsored content itself. Continue the message, answer the next questions they may have and provide one clear action instead of sending them to a generic page or homepage with too many options.

5. Set up conversion tracking before launch.

Before your campaign goes live, implement the OpenAI measurement pixel or Conversions API to track actions that happen beyond the click. This will help you attribute which ads and activities each enquiry, booking or sale belongs to.

6. Decide how to measure the success of the test.

But is the campaign successful? Once you set the budget, testing period and decision rules, define what results would justify you increasing your spend, changing the campaign or stopping the test altogether. Success should be judged against a commercial value, like quality enquiries or sales, or even landing page clicks in some cases, not impressions alone. Working with an experienced ads specialist, like someone with our 25+ years of experience can help streamline this process.

Most Common Causes of Wasted Ad Spend

ChatGPT ads may be new, but some advertising fundamentals always apply, which can easily waste valuable budgets. Some of the most common ways we’ve seen include:

  • Starting without a clear commercial goal, meaning spend isn’t going toward an action that supports your business’s needs.
  • Trying to reach everyone at once, resulting in budget getting scattered too thin across different audiences, needs and offers, leaving little useful data to be used.
  • Using a message that doesn’t match the audience, so people may ignore the ad or click through with the wrong expectation, wasting spend.
  • Measuring activity instead of outcomes, such as using strong impressions or click numbers to measure success even if qualified leads of sales are low.
  • Launching without reliable tracking, leaving no clear way to identify which ads influenced which valuable actions.
  • Increasing spend too quickly, magnifying unresolved problems before the campaign’s had time to prove its actual value.

For a campaign to be worthwhile, it should generate valuable actions that make an impact to your business at a sensitive acquisition cost. This is the evidence Pixelstorm recommends looking for before increasing your budget.

Similar to the age old debate of SEO versus Google Ads, there is now ChatGPT Ads versus GEO and AEO. However, like the argument that comes before it, each has a different goal with different purposes, giving each their place.

Where AI SEO, like GEO and AEO fit in your overall strategy depends on your business and goals. If you have the budget to test a new avenue and platform, it may be an option to consider for the right industries. Working with a digital marketing partner who treats your strategy as a whole puzzle, and not individual pieces, like Pixelstorm, can help guide you on where they may fit into your current plan.

How paid advertising and GEO can work together.

When ads and generative engine optimisation (GEO) are used together, they help target audiences in different places, often at a different stage of their buying decision. Optimising your existing content with the aim of becoming visible in people’s AI searches or responses to their questions helps build organic visibility when people use AI tools to research a problem or compare options. Ad provides an additional opportunity to appear alongside relevant conversations without influencing the organic answer, instead using a targeted offer to drive interactions.

Key Takeaways Before You Consider Trying OpenAI Ads in Australia

Now ChatGPT Ads are in Australia, businesses have a new way to reach consumers at a different stage of the funnel. While getting in early may sound like a good idea, it’s important to keep in mind it’s not for everyone and:

  • Ads are not part of ChatGPT’s answers, do not influence organic responses and are clearly labelled as sponsored.
  • OpenAI is still in Beta, so it’s experimental. There is still not enough Australian pricing or long-term performance patterns to use as a benchmark.
  • Campaigns should complement proven marketing, treated as a test alongside established channels, not to replacement, yet.
  • Strong foundations, like a clear offer, focused targeting, optimised landing pages and reliable tracking, are still just as important for a successful ROI.
  • Business outcomes should be used to determine success, using qualified enquiries, sales and acquisition costs over impressions or cheap clicks.

At Pixelstorm, we have spent decades aligning paid advertising, SEO, conversion optimisation and web design into complete strategies that support businesses in their growth and goals. Now, ChatGPT Ads is part of that journey. Speak with our team to explore if ChatGPT ads might be a good fit for your business and goals.
